Ahmed Deedat

About Scholar

Ahmed Deedat (1918–2005) was a prominent South African Islamic scholar, author, and orator renowned for his work in comparative religion. Born in Tadkeshwar, British India, he moved to South Africa at a young age. Deedat was largely self-taught and became known for his extensive knowledge of both Islamic and Christian scriptures. He gained international recognition through public debates with evangelical Christian figures, where he defended Islamic perspectives and challenged Christian doctrines. His dynamic speaking style and deep understanding of religious texts made him a significant figure in interfaith dialogues.

In 1957, Deedat co-founded the Islamic Propagation Centre International (IPCI) in Durban, South Africa, aiming to disseminate Islamic teachings and engage in religious discussions. He authored several booklets and delivered lectures that addressed common misconceptions about Islam and analyzed Christian theology from an Islamic viewpoint. His efforts in promoting Islamic awareness and fostering interreligious understanding were recognized in 1986 when he was awarded the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam. Deedat’s legacy continues to influence contemporary Islamic scholarship and interfaith engagements.
